Founded in 1901 in Schenectady, NY, Alco was the second largest manufacturer of steam locomotives in the U.S. during the first quarter of the 20th century. In 1924, Alco produced the first commercially successful diesel-electric locomotive in partnership with General Electric and Ingersoll-Rand and became one of the largest manufacturers of diesel engines in the world.

EMD (Electro-Motive Diesel, Inc.)

Formerly the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors, Electro-Motive Diesel, Inc. (EMD) is currently the world’s second largest manufacturer of railroad locomotives. Founded in Cleveland, Ohio in 1922, EMD was sold by GE in 2005.

Although diesel engine locomotives first came to American railroads in the 1920s, their use was confined to diesel switch engines and later to passenger train diesel engine locomotives. It wasn't until 1940 that the Electro Motive Division of General Motors (EMD) demonstrated that diesel engines could practically replace steam locomotives in heavy-duty service.
